Leo Tonkin: The Pioneer of Salt

Leo M Tonkin, Pioneer Of The Salt Therapy Industry

Source: The Insider’s Guide to Spas Published Date: January 16, 2023

The founder and CEO of SALT Chamber, Leo Tonkin is a man of kindness and integrity who has literally aligned himself with the salt of the earth.

Initially, when I got involved in this 10, 11 years ago, salt rooms were being designed based on underground European salt caves. The very first salt rooms designed above ground had white salt walls to mimic a cave-like environment.

I didn’t think that was a very inviting environment for Americans unfamiliar with salt caves, so I started using Himalayan salt as a décor element. I was the pioneer of how to backlight and create salt block systems to create ambiance. There is a fallacy that Himalayan salt gives off negative ions and it cleans the air around it. A class-action lawsuit in New York had scientists disprove these claims, but there are still companies in the spa industry selling Himalayan salt making false claims.

The multipurpose salt therapy concept from Salt Chamber uses a Salt FX Pro Halogenerator that grinds and disperses pure-grade sodium chloride into micron-sized dry salt aerosol particles.

These benefit users by being inhaled into the respiratory system and absorbed by the skin. The company incorporates Himalayan salt into its chambers as a décor element to create a signature wellness experience for guests. While the salt décor provides ambience, the respiratory and skin benefits come from the dry salt particles dispersed into the room.

“Salt Chamber is an innovator in the salt décor design process. We started using Himalayan salt, not only for its beneficial qualities but for its amazing natural colours and hues,” says the brand’s founder and CEO, Leo Tonkin.

Salt Chamber partners with Robert D. Henry Architects on designing Salt Booth and Cabin to debut at ISPA in September

Salt Chamber

Source: Salt Chamber Published Date: October 2016

Las Vegas, NV– (October, 2016) – Salt Chamber founder and CEO Leo Tonkin and Robert Henry, founder of Robert D. Henry Architects recently partnered to design a signature SALT Booth®, which would be used for a single individual, and a SALT Cabin™, that can provide salt therapy for 2-8 people. “We are very excited to be launching this project at the International Spa Association (I-SPA) event that will be held in Las Vegas this week,” said Henry.

People have long recognized the curative effects of breathing in the ocean air and bathing in the ocean for the wellness benefits provided to us by Mother Nature. Salt Therapy, also known as Halotherapy, works by inhaling dry micro-ionized pure sodium chloride particles from a Halogenerator into a relaxing Salt Cabin or Salt Booth. Wet Salt provided by the ocean is already saturated whereas Dry Salt is far more effective in helping people with respiratory and skin conditions.  Dry salt is super absorbent, anti-inflammatory and is anti-bacterial which helps detoxify the respiratory and integumentary systems.

This Universally Effective Mineral Is Making Headlines.

Source: American Spa Trend Report 2016 Published Date: December 2015

Though by no means a new ingredient, salt is spicing up spas like never before. From salt rooms and caves to healing Himalayan salt crystals, tools, and beds to treatments and experiences that incorporate salt, sodium chloride is most certainly making waves. One of the hottest ways to sprinkle it into spas comes in the form of salt rooms and caves that incorporate halotherapy, or dry salt therapy.

“When it is inhaled, the dry salt acts like a sponge, absorbing all the mucus, pollen, allergens, and foreign toxins that may be in the respiratory system,” says Leo M. Tonkin, CEO of The Salt Chamber and cofounder and chairman of the Salt Therapy Association. “It is also anti-inflammatory, so people with restricted airways find tremendous relief.” Sofia Benke, owner of The Salt Cave (multiple locations), says the particles also influence the integumentary system (skin, hair, nails, glands, and nerves). “Salt microparticles inhibit the growth or reproduction of bacteria, reduce swelling, and ease inflammation. The therapy results in pH normalization and better skin microcirculation.” Additionally, the salt penetrates deeply into the epidermal layers of the skin and absorbs any excess oils, which allows accelerated cellular growth of skin cells and improves skin rigidity, says Tonkin.

American Spa - Where Relaxation Reigns

Source: American Spa Published Date: December 2015

The popular saying “Everything old is new again” has never been more apropos than when applied to salt and spa. Salt, a mineral composed primarily of sodium chloride, was used by the ancient Egyptians for trade, medicinal, and religious purposes.
