10 Tips to Get the Most Out of Salt Therapy at Home

What is Halotherapy?

Halotherapy (also known as salt therapy) is a natural, drug-free, non-invasive health treatment that has been used for centuries to aid in the treatment of respiratory and skin conditions. It involves inhaling dry salt particles in a salt room or salt cave, SALT Booth®, or Pop-Up SALT Booth® using a SALT FX® home halogenerator.

Halotherapy has been proven to be beneficial for people suffering from allergies, asthma, bronchitis, colds and flu, skin conditions, and more. If you are wanting to bring respiratory wellness to your home, salt therapy is the answer.

How Halotherapy Works

Halotherapy works by replicating the microclimate of a natural salt cave. A halogenerator grinds pharmaceutical-grade salt into tiny, micron-sized particles which are then dispersed into the air in the salt room or SALT Booth®. When you breathe in these micron-sized salt particles they absorb moisture from your mucous membranes and help to break down mucus buildup in your sinuses and lungs, allowing you to clear airway congestion caused by allergies, smoke, environmental pollution, and more.

The salt also helps reduce inflammation and decreases histamine production.

Halotherapy offers many more potential benefits, including improved lung capacity, decreased stress levels, improved sleep quality, reduction of inflammation, and more.

Studies have also shown that halotherapy can help treat a wide range of skin conditions like acne, psoriasis, and eczema, by providing relief from itching and irritation associated with these conditions.

In addition to treating existing medical issues, halotherapy can also act as preventive medicine for healthy individuals looking to maintain optimum lung function and overall wellness.

If you are looking for an all-natural way to improve your family’s healthcare needs without resorting to prescription medications or invasive treatments, then halotherapy may be just what you need! With its many potential benefits, it is no wonder why so many people are turning to this ancient healing practice for relief from allergies, asthma, bronchitis, and other chronic illnesses.

At SALT Chamber, we offer full salt room designs, SALT Booths®, and SALT FX® home halogenerator + Pop-Up SALT Booth® bundle packages. We are committed to having a halotherapy option that fits every need.

Plan Your Salt Room Wisely

In order to get the most out of halotherapy, you will want to design your room with a few things in mind. Working with a professional can help avoid stressful hangups; at SALT Chamber, we are happy to help with everything from design, to blueprints, to installation.

Here are a few details to think about:

Decide where you want your salt room.

This is an important first step. You want the space to be somewhere that you WANT to go.

Would you like natural light?

Look for a room with lots of windows.

Are you looking for a cozy, cave-like experience?

Minimize the natural light, and consider adding salt bricks or salt panels with LED backlighting to add to the ambiance.

How many people will be in there at once?

Just you? You and your partner? Is it being built with your children’s use in mind? Think playroom for your kids, and be sure to keep in mind any mobility needs. A little prep in the beginning goes a long way toward getting the most out of your salt therapy at home.

Are you using a SALT Booth® or SALT FX® home halogenerator + Pop-Up SALT Booth® bundle package?

You can still customize your experience. Try playing with lighting and sound. When possible, place the portable halotherapy booth in a quiet place where you can relax, and where disruptions will be minimalized.

Purchase a SALT FX® halogenerator.

Himalayan salt lamps are lovely, and our salt decor is being used in spas, restaurants, upscale hotels, and homes! While these devices can be very soothing to look at, they do not provide salt therapy. You must purchase a halogenerator to crush and disperse the salt, then breathe it in and allow it to fall on your skin, in order to get the health benefits of halotherapy.

Create a salt room that you want to relax in.

Let this space be a haven. We love LED backlit salt walls, Himalayan salt lamps, and salt boulders for decor. Comfortable chairs for relaxing in, like zero-gravity chairs, are an important investment.

Make sure that the chairs are easy to get in and out of, and that the decor is not a tripping hazard. If your children are using the salt room, make sure that there is an activity corner for them so that they are not bored.

Consider adding music or a soundscape option (like waves or rain). Soundscapes can also help mask any household sounds that will inevitably be going on around you.

Creating a comfortable, visually relaxing room will encourage you to keep coming back for more.

Create a Wellness Plan

What are you using your salt room for? Think about adding halotherapy to your schedule, just like you would a massage or exercise. Studies show that adding an activity to your calendar increases the odds of you following through.

Everyone reacts to salt therapy differently, so you’ll be able to create your own schedule based on how much you need and how well it’s working.

Be sure to track your progress. Notice the possible improvement in the following areas:

  • Ease in breathing.
  • More sleep.
  • Less snoring.
  • Clearer sinuses.
  • Decrease in asthma symptoms.
  • Clearer skin.
  • An overall decrease in stress.
  • An increased immune response to common colds and the flu.

By clearly tracking your progress, you will be motivated to continue using halotherapy.

Anticipate your needs before you enter the room.

Make sure the room is at a comfortable temperature, and have a blanket ready in case you get chilly.

Other things to consider:

  • Bring in water. Sometimes the salt can cause a mild scratch in your throat.
  • As mucous loosens from the salt, you may notice a runny nose or sneezing, have kleenex handy.
  • A book can make time fly.
  • Dress comfortably. If you are working on a skin condition, make sure that it is exposed to the air, so salt particles can work their wonders.

If you are using the room with your children, make sure they have everything they need to have a positive experience. You want them to love the room! Some ideas:

  • Have a special toy or puzzle that they only play with when they are in the room.
  • Use this time to read a favorite book to them.
  • Consider having salt on your floor in between bricks or pavers. It is a sensory delight.
  • Bring in lasers and have a light show.
  • Listen to an audio book or story.

Be creative, and use this time to nourish, relax, and support yourself and your family’s commitment to health. It can also be a sweet bonding time with your kids; remember to play!

Think about creating a ritual for yourself.

You have thought about your kids and prepped a room that your elderly parents can use. Don’t forget to pamper yourself as well.

  • Consider adding a meditation or mindfulness practice to your session. You can use an app, or keep it simple and focus on your breathing.
  • Buy a massage chair, or bring in a massage roller.
  • Stretch, or settle into a yoga routine.
  • Bring in your sweetie and give each other foot rubs.

Make this session yours, and enjoy this time that you have gifted yourself.

Bring in your community.

Neighbors, friends, sisters, and coworkers can all benefit from your salt room.

It’s OK to cram it into your day!

We have all been there. A day where chaos reigns and the best-laid plans fall apart. It’s ok to multitask. Bring in your phone and laptop and work. Meal plan. Days like this happen, and you have our permission to get it all done.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.

Drinking plenty of water during your salt therapy session is important for several reasons. First, it helps keep your body hydrated so that it can absorb the nutrients from halotherapy more easily. Additionally, drinking water helps flush out toxins from your body that may have accumulated prior to your session. Finally, hydration helps promote better circulation in your skin so that it can absorb more of the beneficial properties of the salt.

Why You Should Drink Water Before and After Your Session

It’s not just important to drink water during a salt therapy session; you should also make sure to drink plenty before and after as well! Before beginning your session, drinking 8-12 ounces of water will ensure that your body is adequately hydrated, and afterward, replenishing fluids lost throughout the session will further promote better absorption of all those wonderful benefits.
